According to the Agni Purana, it is believed that when Lord Brahma created the universe, he first created the sons of Manas. One of them Manas son Rishi Atri was married to Anusuiya daughter of Rishi Kardam and Moon is their child. According to the Padma Purana, Brahma commanded his son Atri to expand the universe. At his command, Maharishi Atri began an austerity. One day a few drops of water fell from Maharishi's eyes which were very bright.

Origin of Moon

Then Disha came in the form of a woman and accepted those drops with the desire of getting a son. But the directions could not hold those drops and abandoned them. Brahma named that abandoned womb as Moon. According to Skanda Purana, when the gods and asuras churned the ocean together, fourteen gems came out. Moon is one of those fourteen gems.

According to Puranas, it is believed that Moon was married to 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati. whose names are Rohini, Revati, Kritika, Mrigashira, Adra, Punarvasu, Megha, Swati, Chitra, Falguni, Hasta, Radha, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Sunnita, Pushya Ashwlesha, Ashad, Abhijit, Shravan, Sarvistha, Satabhishak, Prostapadas , Ashvayuz and Bharani are. It is believed that 27 Nakshatras are named after these girls. A month is complete when the moon goes around 27 Nakshatras.
