Nationality: Candidates must be citizens of India.

Age and Marital Status: The age limit can vary depending on the entry route, typically ranging from 18 to 28 years. Specific branches may have different age requirements. Additionally, depending on the level of entry and position, there might be restrictions on marital status (typically, candidates applying for a flying branch or as a cadet are required to be unmarried).

Educational Qualification: The required educational qualification can range from 10+2 with subjects such as Physics and Mathematics for entry into the flying branch, to graduate and post-graduate degrees for Ground Duty and Technical branches. The educational criteria also depend on the type of commission one is applying for Permanent Commission or Short Service Commission.

Physical Standards: Candidates must meet the physical and medical standards laid out by the IAF. This includes specific requirements for height, weight, eyesight, and overall medical fitness.

Examinations and Selection: Candidates are required to clear various entrance examinations, such as the National Defence Academy (NDA) exam, Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam, or the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) based on their education level and the branch they are applying to. After clearing written exams, they must also pass the Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews, which include psychological testing, group testing, and personal interviews.

Training: Those who successfully complete the selection process undergo rigorous training at one of the IAF training institutions, such as the Air Force Academy.
